‘Karuppu’ blends mythology and courtroom drama
Directed by RJ Balaji, ‘Karuppu’ is described as a mythological mass entertainer. The story follows Saravanan, played by Suriya, a lawyer who serves as the human avatar of deity Karuppusamy. While the film continues to perform well commercially, critical response has remained mixed.ETimes, in its review of the film, wrote, “After the first half’s feels mode, director RJ Balaji appears so occupied with piling on fan-service moments that the second half turns into full-blown Reels mode, and the film gradually loses focus.”The review further added, “As long as it sticks to “just court things”, Karuppu works. But once it goes all out “just God things”, the film swaps human emotion for divine spectacle — and emerges less powerful for it.”Despite the mixed reviews, the film has managed to maintain a solid theatrical run during its first week.DISCLAIMER: The box office numbers and the data in this article are compiled from public and industry sources.
