What is Progeria?
Progeria, according to reports from Cleveland Clinic, is “a rare genetic condition that causes rapid aging in children. A tiny genetic mutation causes the disease. Progeria causes signs of aging such as balding and wrinkled skin. The condition is always fatal. Death most often occurs as a result of a heart attack or stroke. A drug called lonafarnib may slow down the progression of the disease.” The report further added, “Newborns with the disorder appear to be healthy at birth but usually start to show signs of premature aging during their first one to two years of life. Their growth rate slows, and they don’t gain weight as expected. Children with the condition have typical intelligence.”
