The actress was only 21 years old when she dropped everything back home and moved all the way to New York City, determined to make it as an actress and model. However, within three months of arriving, her initial savings completely ran dry, and she was out of options for a while. Not only that but when she reached out to her mother to ask for financial support, she was denied. Because of this, she was unable to afford rent and other basic amenities, which in turn resulted in her having to stay in the homeless shelter.Over the years, the actress has openly talked about that time of her life when she was extremely struggling and was tight on money as well. While talking to PEOPLE in 2017, she opened up about how “that was rough. Some fine hours.”
Halle Berry opens up about being homeless and expresses how thankful she is for her mother
She recalled her time in New York when she finally ran out of her savings and was almost out of cash. “I mean three months later, I was out of my cash,” she explained. “I called my mother and asked her to send me some money, and she said no, and that subsequently led to a year of not speaking to her because I was so upset that she wouldn’t help me,” she added.Berry further talked about how important it was for her mother to refuse to help her, and despite how bad it felt at the time, today she is truly grateful for that. “That’s probably one of the best things she did for me … She said, ‘If you want to be there, then you work it out.’ And I had to work it out. Giving up was never an option,” she mentioned.

Berry also added, “It was proof to her and everybody else. It took me right back to my high school years. ‘You say I can’t; watch me. I’m going to figure this out.’ And shelter life was part of figuring it out for a minute until I could get a waitressing job. Then I got a bartending job, and until I could figure that out, that’s what I did.”
