Turbo-petrol engines are increasingly being offered in affordable SUVs in India, with several compact and sub-compact models under Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) now featuring this option, delivering improved performance over naturally aspirated units. These engines provide stronger low-end torque for easier city driving and better acceleration for highway overtakes. The shift reflects changing buyer preferences, with demand growing for more responsive performance without a significant increase in cost.Manufacturers are also making turbo-petrol variants available in lower and mid trims, improving accessibility. Tata Nexon First SUV on the list is Tata Nexon turbo petrol priced from Rs 7.31 lakh (ex-showroom), Smart MT variant. The sub-compact SUV gets a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine which puts out 120hp and 170Nm of torque. The engine is offered with a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AMT, while a DCT automatic is also available but priced above Rs 10 lakh.
