Oscar-winning István Szabó is all set with the cast for his next big project, a highly anticipated period drama piece titled ‘Embers’. Famed English actor Ralph Fiennes has reportedly been added as the lead.

According to Deadline, Ralph Fiennes, along with Viggo Mortensen, Charlotte Rampling, Katherine Langford, Louis Hofmann, Gijs Blom, Evelyne Brochu, and Jonah Russell will also be a part of the upcoming drama piece from the mind of István Szabó. This is Szabó’s second film since 2012, and the first film that he is working on in the past 6 years.As per the aforementioned report, Christopher Hampton, who is best known for his work on ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ will be adapting the drama film from a novel written by bestselling author Sándor Márai. The filming for the movie has already begin, with all of the actors for the movie shooting in Budapest, Hungary currently.Not only that, but the first official look for Fiennes, Mortensen and Langford’s characters from the drama film have also been released online. The project is also being joined by Oscar-winning composer Mychael Danna, production designer Attila F. Kovacs, cinematographer Dániel Garas, costume designer Bea Merkovits, and editor David Wharnsby.

István Szabó talks about his first film in 6 years

Szabó expressed excitement over working on the project and with all of the actors that have been cast in the film. He cited, “Since Christopher Hampton sent it to me, Robert Lantos and I have been waiting to film the best script I have ever held in my hands. The basis, Márai’s novel, is one of the most beautiful works of 20th Century fiction. Christopher perfectly adapted the novel for film.”

The official synopsis for the upcoming movie has been released online. It reads, “Embers reconnects once inseparable friends, Henrik (Fiennes) and Konrad (Mortensen), decades after Konrad’s mysterious disappearance and uncovers over the course of one evening the secret that tore them apart—and the woman at the center of it.”
