EV sales jump 53% on PVs, 2-wheelers

NEW DELHI: India’s electric-vehicle retail sales rose 53% year-on-year in Aug, powered by strong gains in electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles, although a sequential decline pointed to uneven momentum across manufacturers.Retail sales across electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles totalled 2,98,448 units, compared with 1,95,250 units in Aug 2025, according to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) data. Volumes, however, declined 9% from 3,27,901 units in July. FADA said data were collated on Sept 4 from 1,467 of the country’s 1,469 regional transport offices across India.Electric two-wheelers remained the largest segment, with sales rising 67% to 1,83,204 units. Their share of overall two-wheeler retail increased to 10.7% from 7.7% a year earlier. The category also reflected a shift towards established manufacturers. Bajaj Auto’s electric two-wheeler sales surged 236% to 41,114 units, while market leader TVS Motor grew 91% to 48,938 units. Ather Energy expanded 49.7% to 28,757 units and Hero MotoCorp 38% to 19,007 units. Ola Electric moved in the opposite direction, declining 29% to 13,852 units.Electric passenger-vehicle sales climbed 51.9% to 30,696 units, increasing their share of passenger-vehicle retail to 7.6% from 5.8%. Tata Motors retained the lead with 13,158 registrations, up 63.2%, while Mahindra grew 56.2% to 6,464 units. JSW MG Motor declined 17.8% to 4,622 units. New entrants VinFast and Maruti Suzuki recorded 2,199 and 1,412 units, respectively.Electric three-wheeler sales grew 25.3% to 79,846 units, led by Bajaj Auto and Mahindra. Electric commercial vehicles were the fastest-growing category, expanding 188.3% to 4,702 units, though from a relatively small base. The figures show India’s EV market broadening rapidly, but Aug’s sequential contraction and widely divergent company performances suggest the next phase will be shaped increasingly by execution, product availability and competitive scale.
