NEW DELHI: IndiGo on Monday placed a record order for over 1,000 engines for its 510 Airbus A320neo family of aircraft. Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and airlines don’t disclose the deal size as the price is negotiated with the customer, but based on the list price, the cost of the engines is around $14.5 billion. The airline, which currently has a fleet of over 430 planes, has an order book of almost 1,000 aircraft that are to be delivered over a decade. It plans to double its fleet by 2030.The order for LEAP-1A engines at the Farnborough Air Show was placed with CFM International, which will set up an engine maintenance repair overhaul (MRO) in the country.The engine OEMs are going to grow their presence in India, thanks to massive orders from Indian carriers. India is CFM’s third-largest market, with five Indian carriers operating more than 400 LEAP-powered aircraft and have 2,000 engines on order. CFM is a 50/50 joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines. Last Nov, Safran had inaugurated an MRO in Hyderabad.In a statement, IndiGo CEO-designate Willie Walsh said, CFM has been a partner since 2016, and supports IndiGo’s fleet of over 375 Airbus planes. “With a strong installed base, manufacturing in Pune, a broad local supplier network, and advanced engineering in Bengaluru, we remain committed to supporting IndiGo’s growth and expanding our presence in India,” said GE Aerospace chairman & CEO H Lawrence Culp Jr.Separately, Honeywell Aerospace announced that IndiGo has selected its avionics and power systems for its order of 810 new Airbus A320neo aircraft.IndiGo has about 1,000 Airbus aircraft on order, including 60 widebody A350s with an option of 40 more of them. Its June 2023 firm order for 500 A320 family aircraft is the largest single purchase agreement in commercial aviation valued at $50 billion at list price.
