He had been battling health issues this year and was unable to attend FIFA World Cup matches.Jorge played a major role in Messi’s football career and was involved from the early stages of his son’s journey. He was Messi’s first adviser and agent and supported him during his time at Newell’s Old Boys before helping him make the move to Spain.When Messi was 13, Jorge helped arrange his move to Barcelona’s youth academy. Barcelona also paid for the treatment of Messi’s growth hormone deficiency, a condition that affected his physical development. Messi required daily injections as part of the treatment and eventually reached a height of 1.70 metres.Jorge remained involved in Messi’s career after his son established himself in professional football, handling his representation and helping manage his affairs off the field.Jorge was married to Celia Cuccittini and had four children: Lionel, Rodrigo, Matias and Maria Sol.Messi’s decision to step away from his professional commitments comes as he spends time with his family following his father’s death.
