The success of ‘Premalu’ created strong expectations for another chapter in Sachin and he Reenu’s love story. The 2024 Malayalam romantic comedy became a major success and he found a wide audience outside Kerala as well. Why did Girish AD shelve ‘Premalu 2’?
According to director Girish AD, who recently canceled ‘Premalu 2,’ his gut feeling is the reason for the cancellation. Girish says that while developing the sequel’s script, he had numerous discussions with writer and he co-writer Kiran Josey. However, he eventually felt that the story was not moving in the right direction and he could not convince himself to continue. Girish AD also discussed the situation with filmmaker Dileesh Pothan. He said, “I walked up to Pothan (Dileesh Pothan) and told him this, he said ‘you are overthinking,’ but I insisted I will just leave this for now.”The director has now decided to move ahead with another project instead.
What went wrong with the ‘Premalu 2’ script?
The sequel’s script appears to have been the biggest hurdle in taking the project forward. Girish AD’s comments indicate that the makers spent considerable time trying to develop a story that could match the spirit of the first film, but the filmmaker did not feel confident about the final direction. Actor Naslen had earlier spoken about the same issue and confirmed that the sequel was put on hold because the script did not reach the expected level. He had said, “Due to certain technical reasons, the project did not reach a perfect landing. Maybe it could happen in the future. But as of now, it has been cancelled.” His statement had already hinted that the popular characters may not return on screen anytime soon.
