Former Indian cricketer and actor Yograj Singh has moved court seeking anticipatory bail after an FIR was registered against him at Chandigarh’s Sector 36 police station over allegedly derogatory and misogynistic remarks made in the web series ‘Lukkhe’. The report also stated that the court has issued notices to the state and asked for a response by May 20.

FIR filed against Yograj Singh over misogynistic statements

The controversy erupted after a 17-second clip from ‘Lukkhe’, a Hindi web series released on May 8, 2026, went viral on social media. In the clip, Yograj Singh’s character, identified as ‘Walia Sahab’, allegedly says that a woman’s place is “at the stove during the day and for intimacy at night” while speaking to a female police officer character.The FIR was registered under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which covers acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman, and Section 62-A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.The complaint was filed by District Bar Association treasurer and advocate Ujjwal Bhasin, along with advocate Jatin Verma. Bhasin alleged that the dialogues targeted women who work outside their homes while also managing domestic responsibilities. The StatesmanSpeaking to IANS, Bhasin said, “I have also appealed to the Women’s Commission to take suo motu action against him because the statement points not only to the women of Chandigarh but also to all those women across the country who leave home to earn bread and butter.”He further added, “I don’t think anyone will consider him as their idol from now on. Youngsters will also stop coming to him for coaching. Their mothers won’t send them to him after listening to the remark.”The complainant has also objected to the use of a Chandigarh Police uniform in the series and to a female character being named ‘Gurbani’, a term of religious significance in Sikhism.

Punjab Women’s Commission takes suo motu cognisance

The Punjab State Women’s Commission issued a notice to Yograj Singh and sought an inquiry through a senior officer of the Punjab Police Headquarters. Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill stated that the body had reviewed media reports regarding “objectionable statements” in the web series and directed Punjab Police to investigate and submit an action taken report. Gill also confirmed she would meet the Punjab Director General of Police to ensure appropriate action is taken.

No response from Yograj Singh or makers of ‘Lukkhe’

No response from Yograj Singh had been issued. Neither the makers of ‘Lukkhe’ nor the actor has put out any official statement regarding the allegations.Yograj Singh has previously courted controversy over several public statements, including allegations against MS Dhoni in September 2024 and remarks about Kapil Dev in January 2025.The matter is next expected to be heard on May 20, when the state is scheduled to file its reply on the anticipatory bail application.
