Ranveer Singh’s ‘Don 3’ controversy

Ranveer Singh was announced as the new Don in 2023, stepping into a role previously played by Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. The announcement generated significant excitement and curiosity among fans, but the project soon went quiet with no updates on casting, shoot schedules, or a release plan.Reports of creative differences between the actor and the production house, Excel Entertainment followed. According to various accounts, Ranveer was reportedly frustrated by repeated delays and the absence of a finalised script and was said to favour a darker, grittier take on Don, at odds with producer Farhan Akhtar‘s preference for staying closer to the earlier films’ tone. Matters reportedly worsened when Ranveer learnt the makers were exploring other casting options while he remained attached to the project.

FWICE steps in

The dispute soon moved beyond a creative disagreement. Industry reports indicated Excel Entertainment sought Rs 40–45 crore in damages from Ranveer over pre-production losses, with the matter reportedly going before the Producers Guild of India for mediation before landing at FWICE.FWICE Chief Advisor Ashoke Pandit stated that Farhan Akhtar and producer Ritesh Sidhwani had personally approached the federation. He noted that significant expenditure had already been incurred, including overseas recce trips, hotel bookings, and arrangements for over 200 crew members. Pandit also confirmed that Ranveer had signed a three-film agreement with Excel Entertainment and had participated in script discussions and the announcement shoot. On May 25, FWICE issued a formal non-cooperation directive, alleging that Ranveer had not responded to repeated summons. Pandit warned that affiliated workers across India would not work with him on films, advertisements, or any other projects until he personally addressed the matter before the body.

Ranveer Singh’s response

Ranveer has not commented on the controversy directly. His team issued a brief statement saying he had “consciously chosen to maintain silence” and that he continued to hold “deep respect and goodwill” for everyone associated with the ‘Don’ franchise.
