Julia Roberts’ 3 children: All about Hazel, Phinnaeus and Henry, and the iconic outfits the caring mother is saving for them |
Julia Roberts has spent years attending award shows, walking red carpets and starring in films watched by millions. Her children, however, have mostly known a different side of her. The actress shares twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, and younger son Henry, with her husband, cinematographer Danny Moder. The couple have kept family life private, so Roberts’ occasional stories about the children offer a rare look at what goes on when the cameras aren’t around. With all three now away at college, the house is a little quieter. Roberts has also been thinking about what she wants to pass on to them. And no, it isn’t just family photographs. She has kept some of her most memorable outfits, including a dress she wore on the night she won an Oscar. There’s also a rather personal keepsake from her early days with Moder.
Meet Julia Roberts and Danny Moder’s children
Roberts and Moder married on 4 July 2002. Their twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus, were born on 28 November 2004, and their youngest son, Henry, arrived on 18 June 2007.The children have grown up largely away from the public eye. In a 2018 interview with Oprah Winfrey for Harper’s Bazaar, Roberts said she didn’t think they would ever really understand how famous she was. At home, she wasn’t the actress people recognised from films. She was simply their mum.She had also spoken about motherhood in a 2014 interview with The Wall Street Journal, saying she felt she had already achieved a lot in her career before having children. It was a part of her life she felt ready for, rather than something she needed to put off for work. And despite her busy career, Roberts has enjoyed getting involved in her children’s school lives. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she spoke about wearing their school colours and joining in with celebrations. It’s a small detail, but it gives a sense of how she approaches being a parent.
Hazel may inherit one of Julia Roberts’ most iconic Oscar dresses
Hazel has made a few appearances in public. She had a brief role in her mother’s 2016 film ‘Mother’s Day’ and joined her father at the Cannes Film Festival on 10 July 2021, where she made her red-carpet debut. There is also a chance she could one day find a very familiar dress waiting for her. In a 2017 interview with People, Roberts spoke about the clothes and memorabilia she has kept over the years. Moder calls the collection the “heritage collection”.Among the pieces is the black Valentino gown with white piping that Roberts wore to the 2001 Academy Awards. She won Best Actress for ‘Erin Brockovich’ that night, and the dress has remained with her ever since. Roberts has held on to it in case Hazel wants it someday. It is quite a thing to inherit, though Hazel may well have her own ideas about what she wants to wear.Another item Roberts hopes to share with her daughter has nothing to do with fashion. During her 9 October 2022 interview with Jane Pauley on CBS Sunday Morning, she revealed that she still has the first letter Moder ever wrote to her. It was seven pages long. She has kept it all these years and hopes Hazel will read it one day.
Henry has tried on his mother’s famous Armani suit
Henry, the youngest, is interested in skateboarding. Roberts has shared a few birthday tributes to him over the years. On 18 June 2024, when he turned 17, she posted a childhood photograph and called him a “towering 17 year old wonder”.Henry has also had a go at wearing something from his mother’s wardrobe. Speaking to Extra on 30 September 2025, Roberts shared that he had recently tried on the grey Armani men’s suit she wore to the 1990 Golden Globe Awards. She’s kept it all these years, and now her son has tried it on. It’s quite something to see an outfit from one of her old award-show appearances getting a second life in the family. With all three children now away at college, things at home have changed for Roberts and Moder. During her 1 October 2025 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, she joked about becoming an empty nester and admitted that the change could make her emotional. Of course, she still looks forward to having the children back home whenever they visit. The Oscar dress and Armani suit are lovely things to pass down, but that seven-page letter is probably a different story altogether. Roberts has kept it all these years, along with clothes from some of the biggest moments of her career. Her children may not want every single thing she’s saved, but they’ll at least get to hear the stories behind them. And who knows? Hazel might actually end up wearing that Valentino gown one day.
