Sharib Hashmi has opened up about the unexpected casting twist that landed him a much bigger role in ‘Haiwaan’. The actor was initially approached for a smaller part in the Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan-starrer, but after months without any update, he assumed the opportunity had slipped away. However, casting director Amarbir Bajwa eventually returned with an offer for a far more substantial role, giving Hashmi the chance to play a cop with action, humour and shades of grey.
Sharib Hashmi was initially considered for a smaller role
Hashmi revealed that he was first approached by casting director Amarbir Bajwa for another character in ‘Haiwaan’. Although it was a relatively minor role, the actor was keen to take it up simply for the opportunity to work with acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan. As quoted by Mid-day, Hashmi said, “I was initially approached by casting director Amarbir Bajwa for another part. I was happy to do it though it was a smaller role. I just wanted to work in a Priyadarshan film”.However, months passed without any further communication. Hashmi eventually assumed that the role was no longer happening.
Sharib Hashmi got a bigger role months later
What appeared to be a missed opportunity ultimately worked in the actor’s favour. After several months, Bajwa called Hashmi again, this time offering him a significantly bigger role.“A few months later, Amarbir called me for a bigger role. I said yes immediately. My role as a cop has action, humour, and is not just grey,” Hashmi recalled. The actor’s role in ‘Haiwaan’ therefore turned out to be considerably more substantial than the part he had initially been considered for.
Sharib Hashmi recalls his first meeting with Priyadarshan
‘Haiwaan’ also marked Hashmi’s first opportunity to work with Priyadarshan. The actor recalled how the filmmaker immediately focused on his appearance and suggested a change that would make his look more distinctive.“When I met him, I was sporting a fake moustache. He immediately said that he wanted a more robust moustache that I could twirl. It enhanced my look. After working with Priyan sir, I have learned to always be on my toes,” he said.Hashmi’s comments underline how the actor’s initial disappointment over a smaller part eventually turned into an opportunity to take on a more prominent character under Priyadarshan’s direction.
