Stock Market Today Live Updates: BSE Sensex tanks 700 points; Nifty50 slips below 23,700 as Brent tops $100
Stock market live: Markets open lower; Infosys, IndiGo drag indices after Q2 earnings
Indian benchmark indices opened sharply lower on Friday as Brent crude surged above $100 a barrel amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, while disappointing June-quarter earnings from Infosys and InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) further dampened investor sentiment.
The Nifty 50 fell 0.85% to 23,666.35, while the BSE Sensex declined 0.89% to 75,708.19 by 9:15 am IST, putting both benchmark indices on track for a fifth consecutive session of losses.
Investor sentiment remained under pressure after US President Donald Trump warned of “major military punishment” for Iran and its Houthi allies following attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, widening the Middle East conflict and raising concerns over global energy supplies.
Selling was broad-based, with all 16 major sectoral indices trading in the red. The broader market also remained weak, with the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices declining around 0.6% each, Reuters reported.
Among individual stocks, Infosys slipped nearly 2%, while InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) fell about 1.5% after both companies reported weaker-than-expected June-quarter earnings.
