Fans waiting to find out whether ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ will return for a fourth season have received an encouraging update, but the makers have not officially announced a renewal yet. However, Scott M. Gimple, who oversees the wider ‘The Walking Dead’ universe, said the New York-based spin-off has a “good shot” at returning after its third season.Gimple discussed the show’s future during an interview with The Direct at MultiCon 2026. When asked about the possibility of another season, he pointed to the show’s current performance and the response from viewers. “I would hope for everyone to hold out hope, because it’s performing well in the numbers, and people are digging it,” Gimple said. “So, I think it’s got a good shot at it, but it is a different time.”

Gimple recalled a time when traditional television ratings could give producers a clearer idea of how long a series might continue.“When I was showrunning ‘Walking Dead’, I could calculate, ‘Okay, if the ratings halve every year, we have three to four years left,’” Gimple said. He described the current situation as a very different environment, with streaming making the numbers and financial decisions less straightforward. For ‘Dead City’, that means strong audience interest is only one part of the equation. Season 3 gave ‘Dead City’ a strong reception
The update comes after the third season completed its eight-episode run on September 13, 2026. The season starred Lauren Cohan as Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan and continued their complicated story in post-apocalyptic Manhattan.The season finale, ‘Tenebrae’, followed Maggie and Negan as they fought to rescue members of their community, including Luis, from their enemies. The story also opened the possibility of the characters’ world extending beyond the boundaries of Manhattan. That ending leaves room for the story to continue, but it does not itself amount to confirmation of another season.
‘The Walking Dead’ universe is slowing down
Gimple also revealed that viewers should expect a slower pace from the franchise going forward. “The rollout will be slightly slower,” he said, explaining that future spin-offs would arrive with less of the “urgency and speed” associated with earlier stages of the franchise.That approach could affect when fans receive an announcement about ‘Dead City’. The series previously received its Season 2 renewal shortly before its first season ended, while Season 3 was announced after the second season had concluded. The timing of a potential fourth-season announcement could therefore follow a different schedule.
‘Daryl Dixon’ remains the next confirmed chapter
While the future of ‘Dead City’ is still being decided, another part of the franchise already has a confirmed final chapter. AMC announced that Season 4 of ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’, starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride, will be the show’s fourth and final season and is scheduled for 2027. The announcement was made during the franchise’s San Diego Comic-Con panel in July.That makes ‘Dead City’ particularly relevant to the franchise’s next phase. If Maggie and Negan return, their Manhattan story could continue alongside the remaining projects in the wider universe.
Is ‘Dead City’ Season 4 happening?
For now, the answer remains unconfirmed. Gimple’s comments are the clearest recent indication that AMC is considering another season, but they do not constitute an official renewal.
